KEY WORKERS ARE PRICED OUT OF HOMES
Research revealed by Britain's largest mortgage lender the Halifax shows that key public sector workers are priced out of the property market in two-thirds of Britain’s towns.

Nurses, policemen, teachers, ambulance workers and firemen can no longer afford to buy an average priced house in 65% of towns, compared with just 24% five years ago.

Martin Ellis, chief economist at Halifax, said key workers had been "hit hard" by the strength of the property market since 2001.

"Now it is difficult for key workers to buy the average house not only in the south of England but also in significant parts of the Midlands, northern England, Wales and Scotland," he said......read more

The Government have set aside 120 million pounds over the next five years to assist key workers purchase and rent affordable homes. there are a wide range of home ownership schemes available for key workers including:-

Open Market Homebuy – Find your own home on the open market and your local housing association and mortgage lender will assist you by raising 25% of the property value.

Higher Home Buy scheme – Similar to the Open Market Home Buy Scheme, however as part of the London Challenge initiative, further assistance is given to teachers in a managerial position.

Shared Ownership Scheme – Part buy, part rent affordable housing that has been set aside for key worker home ownership.

Intermediate rent scheme – A discounted rent agreement on allocated homes for many keyworker and public sector workers.
